Once a year, we take our Scout Troops on a survival weekend, where we teach them key skills for living in the wild.

Survival inevitably means surviving – even thriving – but without many of the facilities and comforts we usually have when camping. We always do this camp in the winter, which brings the additional challenge of colder and wetter weather.

What skills do we teach?

  • Safe use of saws, axes and knives
  • First aid for survival situations
  • Shelter building
  • Collection and filtering of water
  • Fire lighting techniques
  • Survival hygiene
  • Survival communication
  • Make up and use of a survival kit
  • Cooking meals over an open fire and without utensils

It’s always a lot of fun for our young people, even though this year the temparature dropped to -4.5 degrees centigrade overnight.

You can see the highlights from this year’s Survival Weekend in the short video below, which has been produced by Alasdair Perrin, our volunteer more commonly known as Baloo.

Please get in touch if you would like to find out more about Scouting and how you can join our merry band of volunteers, providing young people with positive experiences and skills for life.
